UK: Research Associate in Chemical and Mathematics department

Research Associate in Multiscale Analysis of Active-Dissipative Nonlinear Spatially Extended Media <London, UK>
Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology and Department of Mathematics, Imperial College London
Fixed Term appointment for a period of 3.0 years
Salary:  £31,340 per annum

Applications are invited by highly talented researchers for a 36 months Postdoctoral Research Associate position funded by the EPSRC Grant "Active-dissipative nonlinear spatially extended media: Complexity, coarse-graining, multiscale analysis and numerical methods" under the joint supervision of Dr S Kalliadasis, Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology and Dr GA Pavliotis, Department of Mathematics.

The systematic derivation of reduced low-dimensional models for the effective dynamics of spatially extended systems  poses a great scientific challenge with important technological applications. The primary aim of the proposed research is the development of state-of-the-art analytical and numerical methodologies for mode reduction, coarse-graining and multiscale analysis of SES, both deterministic and stochastic.

The successful candidate should have a PhD  in Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or other related area and a strong foundation on applied mathematics/general mathematical modelling, mathematical techniques  and stochastic processes. A good knowledge of theoretical fluid mechanics including interfacial/low-to-moderate-Reynolds numbers flows is highly desirable. He/she will be based in the Chemical Engineering Department and will join two highly interdisciplinary teams in Engineering and Mathematics working on a wide variety of exciting projects on the interface between applied mathematics and engineering science fundamentals, stochastic processes, statistical physics, multiscale methods and partial differential equations.

If you would like to discuss the project, please contact Dr Serafim Kalliadasis at S.Kalliadasis@imperial.ac.uk, Tel:  +44-<0>-20-7594-1373, postal address:  Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College, London SW7 2AZ, UK or Dr Grigorios A Pavliotis at G.Pavliotis@imperial.ac.uk, Tel: +44-<0>-20-7594-8564, postal address: Department of Mathematics, Imperial College London, London SW7 2AZ, UK.
