2 PhD positions are available at the new research group of Dr. Ana García-Sáez. The research group is part of the Max-Planck Institute for Metals Research and the German Cancer Research Center and it is located at the Bioquant in Heidelberg, Germany.
We are interested in understanding the molecular details of the regulation of apoptosis in mitochondria, which plays a role in tumor formation. Our research focuses on the interplay between the organization of the mitochondrial membrane, the proteins of the Bcl-2 family and the mitochondrial fusion and fission machinery. The projects involve the reconstitution in vitro of these systems following a synthetic biology approach and their characterization using cutting-edge imaging and single-molecule techniques (FCS, AFM, single particle tracking).
We are looking for highly motivated candidates, who want to work in a young and interactive research team. Experience in fluorescence microscopy, single molecule techniques, protein purification, MATLAB or membrane model systems is desired but not necessary. Successful applicants are interested in quantitative approaches to biology and have good communication skills (English). They should hold a Master, Diploma or equivalent degree in Biophysics, Physics, Biotechnology,
Biochemistry or a related field.
We offer close supervision in a stimulating and interdisciplinary atmosphere. Our lab is embedded in a scientifically and technically well-equipped environment with prestigious research centers nearby, including the DKFZ, the EMBL, the MPI for Medical Research and several university institutes.
Applications should include a cover letter, a statement of your research interests, a CV and the names and contact details of two references. Please submit your application electronically to: ana.garcia@mf.mpg.de
