Iceland: PhD studentship, at Center for Systems Biology

PhD studentship, at Center for Systems Biology, University of Iceland

The Center for Systems Biology, University of Iceland , is looking to recruit a highly motivated PhD student in Bioinformatics/Systems Biology. The research at the CSB UoI focuses on 1> human metabolism and 2> industrial biotechnology. The Center is an interdisciplinary center with the Schools of Medicine, Engineering and Natural Sciences participating.

Systems biology is a new and rapidly growing discipline. It is widely believed to have a broad transformative potential on both basic and applied studies in the life sciences. In particular, metabolic network reconstructions are playing a key role as they provide a framework for investigation of the mechanism underlying the genotype-phenotype relationship. Recently, the first fine-grained, sequence dependent model of transcription and translation for Escherichia coli has been published. This network was subsequently integrated with the available metabolic model yielding in the most comprehensive stoichiometric model of a cell, to-date.  In this master thesis, a similar reconstruction effort will be performed for metabolic genes present in a eukaryotic metabolic network. This resulting network will be used to predict the necessary proteome to drive metabolism in various conditions. This effort represents to first of its kind and will have great impact in computational systems!
biology and in understanding the genetic basis of the eukaryotic organism.
