One PhD research fellowship is offered within the area of Network Media Handling at the Centre for Quantifiable Quality of Service in Communication Systems (Q2S), Centre of Excellence (http://www.q2s.ntnu.no), in the Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The PhD research fellowship is financed by The Research Council of Norway under the project "Perceptual and Cognitive Quality Evaluation Techniques for Audiovisual Systems" (PERCEVAL).
The fellowship is part of a project on the development of no-reference quality evaluation methodologies suitable for audiovisual performances and presentations, together with Simula Research Laboratory, Nofima Mat AS, and the Department of Psychology, University of Oslo. The project targets a number of central questions with respect to perceived audiovisual quality: when do users become aware of low audiovisual quality under the assumption that no direct reference exists, when do users become annoyed by poor quality, and when is information lost due to poor quality?
We seek highly motivated individuals holding a master's degree in media technology, electronics, physics, mathematics, or other relevant disciplines. Ideally, the candidate has a strong background in subjective quality assessment methodologies, e.g. in the areas of image-, video-, audio-, or audiovisual quality, and/or the statistical analysis of such data. Knowledge in technical aspects of areas like telepresence, virtual reality, and interactive applications is preferred.
PhD fellowships at NTNU are normally awarded for 3-4 years with 0-25% of the time spent on teaching and other academic work for the department. The objective of the fellowship is to obtain a PhD degree, hence the successful applicant must be enrolled as a PhD candidate at NTNU.
