Postdoctoral Positions in Geology, Sweden

Geology Postdoctoral Positions For PhD Degree Holders At Stockholm University – Sweden 2009

2 Year Post Doctoral Position in Geology in Improving CH4 water-air exchange models using turbulent energy and isotopic constraints at the Department of Geology and Geochemistry (IGG) in conjunction with the Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research. Ref.no. SU 619-1671-09.

The Department of Geology and Geochemistry (IGG) in conjunction with the Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research announce a 2 year Post Doctoral position. The goal is to quantify the effects of physical and biological controls of the exchange of carbon trace gases in a dynamic mire and lake landscape, Stordalen Mire near Abisko Sweden, that is changing due to regional warming. We want to develop a physical understanding that can be linked to the biogeochemistry by addressing the role of surface energy exchange on C gas release from water surfaces to the atmosphere.

We will use isotope systematics of CH4 across sediment/water and water/air interfaces to link the surface renewal models to better extrapolations and to improve parameterizations of northern gas emissions and atmosphere/surface linkages in the climate system. An important part of this effort involves obtaining measurements that can be used to critically test and improve existing gas exchange models and to characterize the unique isotopic signatures of the CH4 reservoirs from these sources.

The successful candidates would join closely collaborating research groups that participate in the interdepartmental Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research at SU and the new Delta facility for compound specific isotope analysis. Swedish and international collaborations will be actively utilized as well.
Placement at the Department of Geology and Geochemistry.

The position requires a person with a PhD. or equivalent expertise, with good numerical skills and with proven hands-on experience in boundary layer meteorology, micrometeorology, physical limnology, physical oceanography or trace gas isotope systematics. We look for a person who, in close collaboration with others in the research environment, would make:
1. precise lake energy, temperature and gas flux and profile measurements,
2. CO2 and CH4 gas flux and stable isotope measurements, and
3. model development relying on the expertise of our cooperative partners in our research groups and high frequency measurements of weather, energy balance/hydrology.

Postdoctoral Position in Cardiac Electrophysiology, Switzerland

Postdoctoral position in cardiac electrophysiology
(experimental/computational)

Dr. Jan P. Kucera

Description
Heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias) are prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality. The general goal of our research is to better understand the fundamental mechanisms leading to altered propagation of the electrical excitation (action potential) in cardiac tissue. Our interdisciplinary approach involves experiments (cardiac cell cultures grown on microelectrode arrays) and mathematical modeling (computer simulations of the action potential).
Research project: Propagation velocity and action potential duration depend on one or several previous diastolic or interbeat intervals. This dependence, called "restitution", is involved in the generation of arrhythmias. Our aim is to explore restitution by pacing cardiac tissue using innovative protocols during which pacing intervals vary from beat to beat, and by developing novel analyses to extract quantitative information regarding restitution parameters and their involvement in arrhythmia generation.
The project is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The presence of other cardiac electrophysiology research groups in our Department of Physiology and our integration in the Swiss Cardiovascular Research and Training Network provides the opportunity for many collaborations and scientific exchange.

Education
A doctoral degree is required (as this is a postdoctoral position).

Capacities in mathematics and computer programming (e.g., C/C++, Matlab, IDL) and the motivation to apply these skills for the analysis of experimental data and for the development of models represent a major advantage.

Entrance upon
The position is open immediately.

Duration
Granted until March 31, 2011, prolongation depending on funding.

The Institute of Materials Research in Geesthacht invites applications for a 3-year PhD position.

Project description:
The PhD-project will focus on a thermo-mechanically coupled model suitable for the analysis of evolving microstructures. Particularly, the microstructures associated with re-crystallization in magnesium alloys will be investigated. The understanding of such physical phenomena is of utmost importance for predicting the macroscopic material response resulting from different metal forming processes such as extrusion. The goal of the PhD-project is to gain further insight into the relation between process parameters and the final macroscopic response. Such knowledge can finally be used for manufacturing metal sheets or profiles showing improved mechanical properties.

Phd Position in Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands

The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has the following vacancy PhD student 'COMPASS' project(V32.045) at Databases and Hypermedia Department of Mathematics and Computer science

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science provides undergraduate and MSc programs in Mathematics and in Computer Science. The department has research collaborations with other departments at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven as well as with a large number of other universities and companies, both at home and abroad. The Department has approximately 350 employees and more than 700 students.

The Databases and Hypermedia group is world-leading in the area of adaptive hypermedia and adaptive web-based information systems. The group has produced the most referenced reference model for adaptive hypermedia and developed the most popular general-purpose adaptive hypermedia system AHA!. The group has expertise in data mining, web engineering and semantic web, and also works in application fields for adaptive technology, including e-learning and e-culture. The group has ample experience in national and international research projects, both as participant and as coordinator.

Tasks

The COMPASS project (Complex Patterns in Streams), funded by NWO in the open competition program, is a cooperation between the data mining groups of LIACS (Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science) at Leiden University and DH (Databases and Hypermedia) at TU Eindhoven. The goal of the project is the development of stream mining techniques for complex patterns such as graphs.

A short summary of the project:
In recent years there has been a growing interest in the study and analysis of flows of so-called data streams. Typical examples of such streams include Internet traffic data and continuous sensor readings. Traditional data mining approaches are not suitable for mining such streams, because they assume static data stored in a database, whereas streams are continuous, high speed, and unbounded. Therefore, streams must be analyzed as they are produced and high quality, online results need to be guaranteed.

Until now, most pattern mining techniques focus either on non-streaming data, or only consider very simple patterns, such as identifying the hot items from one stream, or constantly maintaining the frequencies in a window sliding over the stream. The challenging task we set forward in this project is to extend the existing state-of-the-art techniques into two, orthogonal directions: on the one hand, the mining of more complex patterns in streams, such as sequential patterns and evolving graph patterns and on the other hand, more natural stream support measures taking into account the temporal nature of most data streams.

The developed techniques will be tested on real-life data, such as social network data and the World-Wide Web. Next to those datasets, in the project we will have access to the data streams generated by a sensor network mounted on a large bridge in The Netherlands.

As PhD Student, you will:

  • perform scientific research;
  • present results on international conferences;
  • publish results in scientific journals;
  • participate in activities of the group and of the department.
