Teaching Assistantships Available for Students Interested in PhD in Second Language Acquisition

The PhD program in Second Language Acquisition at the University of Iowa solicits applications for 4 positions beginning fall 2010 for graduate students interested in obtaining a PhD in SLA with focus on Linguistics, Language Program Direction, or Technology/CALL. Students interested in the PhD must have completed the MA in an appropriate field (e.g., Linguistics, Foreign Language Education). Admission is for the fall semester and students are admitted on a full-time basis only. The PhD in SLA offered by this interdisciplinary program focuses on languages other than English.

Areas of Specialization:

SLA with specialization in linguistics: Students in this specialization area are
interested in studying areas of formal linguistics (e.g., syntax, phonology,
morphology) and/or applied linguistics issues related to their particular second language (L2) focus. Sample student projects and foci within this area of SLA include topics such as the acquisition of the syntactic structures and/or phonological features of an L2, generative and cognitive approaches to explain acquisition. For more research projects see http://www.uiowa.edu/~slalab/

SLA with specialization in language program direction: Students opting for this specialization area are interested in issues where SLA and L2 pedagogy converge. Some examples of areas of interest in this track include issues related to L2 acquisition in the classroom context, language acquisition in the study abroad context, SLA research related to one of the four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking), and the acquisition of pragmatic competence.

SLA with specialization in technology: The third specialization area focuses on the many aspects of technology and how it facilitates second language acquisition. Students who specialize in technology might take courses that focus on design issues, the use of multimedia and L2 learning, web-based learning and its effect on acquisition, developing software or multimedia modules tailored to a specific L2.

For PhD students, support for the academic year will be at least $16,580 (for a half-time assistantship/ 20 hrs. per week). All students with financial support receive tuition fellowships which cover tuition (based on enrollment of 9 hours).
