PhD Studentship in Automatic Face Recognition based on Human Perception

PhD Studentship
Automatic Face Recognition based on Human Perception
University of Glasgow - Departments of Psychology and Electronics & Electrical Engineering

Applications are invited for a studentship on an interdisciplinary project in face recognition. The student will work on automated face processing systems incorporating recent developments in psychology and engineering. The project will lead to hardware implementation of the system on a chip. A project summary is given below.

Candidates should have at least a 2:1 honours degree in electrical engineering, computing science or related discipline. Excellent programming skills in C and C++ are essential and a good understanding of Linux and embedded systems is desirable. Because the final version will be a system on a chip or an embedded device, experience in hardware development is required.

The duration of the studentship is three years, and the successful candidate will receive an annual stipend of £13,290 per annum. PhD fees will be paid.

This studentship is funded by the University of Glasgow Kelvin-Smith scheme. See http://www.gla.ac.uk/research/kelvinsmithfellowshipsscholarships for details. Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Mike Burton (mike@psy.gla. ac.uk), Dr Bernd Porr (b.porr@elec. gla.ac.uk), or Dr Rob Jenkins (rob@psy.gla. ac.uk).

Applicants should send a CV, a letter detailing their suitability for the studentship, and details of two academic referees to Lynda Young, Department of Psychology, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8QQ, or by email to l.young@psy. gla.ac.uk

CLOSING DATE: 30 NOVEMBER 2009

Project Summary: Automatic face recognition based on human perception

Automatic face recognition is not currently good enough to work in practical settings, such as airport security. In contrast, humans seem to be good at recognising faces. In fact, we are only experts in face recognition when we know someone - our ability to match unfamiliar people to their photos (e.g. ID-cards or passports) is rather poor. Our recent research has revealed differences between familiar and unfamiliar face recognition, which account for human perception. However, this analysis - based on an understanding of how faces become familiar - is completely absent from automated systems. Here we propose a project in which knowledge of human familiar face recognition can be built-in to an automated system, and implemented on a chip. The resulting system has considerable potential both commercially, and as a technique for theory development. The project is highly inter-disciplinary, relying on the most recent research methods in psychology and engineering.

Norway: PhD research fellowship

PhD research fellowship in "Strategies, automatic recognition- and gripping technology for small series production of foundry parts"

At the Department of Engineering Design and Materials, Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology, NTNU there is a vacant PhD position within "Strategies, automatic recognition- and gripping technology for small series production of foundry parts". The PhD research fellowship is awarded for a total period of 3 years.

The leading Norwegian manufactures of castings for the international market need new technology to meet the international competition and the environment-, health- and safety requirements. This implies a considerable emphasis on the development of new technology to enhance the use of automation and robotics in the foundries. The small series production does not allow for unique solutions for individual parts. The main challenge is therefore to develop generic solutions that can be used on several different parts or families of parts.

Considerable focus on R & D has put the foundry industry in a leading position regarding casting- and materials technology. However, high salary costs and lack of working resources has created a need for further development of technology within automation and robotics. The Norwegian foundry industry has put their resources together through a R&D project, called "AutoCast" in order to focus on this development. The goal is to develop state of the art technology that ensures competitiveness of the Norwegian foundry industry.

AutoCast started in 2008 and is going to run for four years. The total budget is 40MNOK. The project is supported by the Norwegian Research Council.

Industrial partners are Jøtul (project owner), BMS Steel, Farsund Aluminium Casting (prev. CT Farsund), Ulefos NV, Skarpenord Corrosion, Sperre Støperi, Furnes Hamjern and Elart Metall. (The first three are the leading partners in the project).

The work will include development of both theoretical methods and physical laboratory demonstrations of the technological solutions. The candidate is expected to have a close connection with AutoCast's industrial partners during the entire extension of the PhD project, in particular with the project owner Jøtul, and use these as living labs.

Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent, and must be qualified for the PhD study at NTNU. The applicant must have some knowledge of, and a lot of interest in, one or more of the following subjects: robot grippers, vision systems, industrial RFID and automation.

Further information about Jøtul AS can be found at http://www.jotul.no/ For further information please contact: Professor Sven Fjeldaas, e-mail: Sven.Fjeldaas@ntnu.no, Tel. +47 73 59 69 02

Conditions of appointment: PhD students follow code 1017, grade 45 - 51, gross NOK 355 400 to NOK 394 200 per year (before tax). PhD students are normally remunerated at wage level 45. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment regulations with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for scholarship appointments in universities and university colleges. The goal of the announced position is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants are obliged to engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement. A contract of employment will be set up for the engagement period regulating the rights and duties of the PhD student.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

The positions adhere to the Norwegian Government's policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. Persons with immigrant background and women are encouraged to apply.

The application must contain information of educational background and work experience. Copies of transcripts and reference letters should be enclosed.

An application inclusive CV, grade transcripts and other enclosures should be sent electronically through this page (Apply for this job), ref. no. IVT-136/09. Preferably, we want the attachments in one file. The application deadline is 20 November 2009.

OII Summer Doctoral Programme 2010.

We are accepting applications for the OII Summer Doctoral Programme 2010.

OII SDP2010: Oxford (5-16 July 2010)

http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/teaching/sdp/

The programme aims to stretch the thinking of all students on a range of issues, to provide valuable advice and support for students' thesis research, and to establish a peer network of excellent young researchers.

As in previous years, the programme will involve daily research seminars and panel sessions given by leading academics, with students having the opportunity to present their research to their peers in informal seminars.

Break-out sessions will allow groups to focus more narrowly on research questions of mutual interest, and time is made available for individual research and informal contact with tutors and fellow students. We will let you know as tutors and academic partners are confirmed.

Student feedback on the Summer Doctoral has always been overwhelmingly positive, and the SDP2010 promises to be yet another excellent year in this series. I hope you will consider applying, encourage your students to apply, or forward this email to people who may be interested! Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries.

Best wishes,

Dr Rebecca Eynon

Apply for the SDP2010:

2. Candidates: What are we looking for?

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --

Up to 27 places are available, awarded on a competitive basis. Preference will be given to students at an advanced stage of their doctorate who have embarked on writing their thesis.

Like the course tutors, our SDP students come from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds: computer science, sociology, law, etc. Whatever the background, the programme aims to facilitate deep discussion of both substantive and methodological research issues, and to help students frame their research questions and direct their research.

As in other years, the SDP2010 will seek to generate dialogue and debate between students from different disciplinary backgrounds with a view to improving each student's doctoral thesis and identifying topics for future collaborative research. With these aims in mind, we are particularly keen to attract the most promising students who are prepared to engage with different disciplines, backgrounds and viewpoints.

3. Background: the OII Summer Doctoral Programme

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --

Launched in 2003, the OII SDP is now an important fixture of the OII's year, a time when we bring together a diverse group of students and tutors for two weeks of intense work and discussion. We consciously encourage the international character of the SDP in order to encourage peer networks that are as diverse as possible, and to benefit students who may not have significant academic peer-groups in their own universities.

The programme is held away from Oxford every other year (Beijing 2005, Boston 2007, Brisbane 2009). 2010 being an even year, we will be back home in Oxford.

Quick Stats:

187 students

38 nationalities

86 tutors

370 hours of seminars .. since the first SDP2003. And counting.

4. Fees / Scholarships / Partners

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --

The cost of the course will be € ¢Â£1550, which covers accommodation at Lady Margaret Hall (an Oxford College) from 4-16 July inclusive, and all course tuition fees. Travel to and from Oxford is not included in this fee.

Lady Margaret Hall:

We are currently looking for additional funding to provide support for student scholarships. Students do not need to make a request for a scholarship at the application stage as this will be dealt with once the selection process has been completed.

We are grateful for the generosity of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce) in supporting this programme. Our SDP2010 academic partners will be announced soon.
