  • MPI for Art History, Florence, Italy,
  • MPI for the Biology of Aging, Cologne,
  • MPI for Demographic Research, Rostock,
  • MPI for Economics, Jena,
  • MPI for European Legal History, Frankfurt/Main,
  • MPI for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig,
  • MPI for Foreign and International Criminal Law, Freiburg,
  • MPI for Foreign and International Social Law, Munich,
  • MPI for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Leipzig,

Each fellow enrolled in MNARS will be affiliated with one of these Max Planck Institutes. During the first six months of MNARS, from January through June 2010, all fellows will study together at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock. They will attend lectures and seminars on a broad range of topics in aging research and doctoral students will develop the topic of their dissertation. Instruction will be in English. At the end of the first six months, fellows will go to the Max Planck Institute they are affiliated with and spend the next 30 months in case of doctoral students or the next 18 months in case of postdoctoral fellows working on their research projects. Fellows will meet, together with other MaxNetAging scientists and a few invited speakers, twice a year at research workshops.

Visit http://www.maxnetaging.mpg.de/en/doctoralschool/participants.htm for examples of research questions and for statements about the program of current MaxNetAging students.

Applications should include:

  • a CV,
  • a statement about the level of the job you are seeking (as doctoral or postdoctoral student), why you are interested in working in the MaxNetAging Research School,
  • details of qualifications, including information about honors, awards, or evaluations of your educational degrees (e.g., "cum laude"),
  • a list of publications, if any,
  • names and addresses of 2 people we can contact about you, and for postdoctoral fellows a brief outline about your research agenda in the upcoming two years.

Applicants should also indicate the Max Planck Institute they wish to be affiliated with.

Ph.D. and Post-Doc appointments are made on Ph.D. and Post-Doc stipends. We can provide you with information about the level of your stipend based on the information you provide us on your CV.

The Max Planck Society wishes to increase the share of women in areas where they are underrepresented, and strongly encourages women to apply. The Max Planck Society is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply.

Applications should be addressed to the MaxNetAging Director Prof. James W. Vaupel and sent by e-mail to appl-mnars@demogr.mpg.de. Email inquiries concerning the application process and other aspects of MNARS should also be sent to appl-mnars@demogr.mpg.de.

5 Research scientists in Germany

Universität Siegen
The University of Siegen is an innovative and interdisciplinary university with some 12.000 students and 1.500 employees, including 900 researchers. The University of Siegen offers an excellent study and research environment encompassing humanities and social sciences, as well as economics, natural sciences and engineering and numerous interdisciplinary research projects.

In the Research Training Group "Imaging New Modalities", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and hosted by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Siegen, the following vacancies are to be filled until October 1st, 2009:

5 Research Scientists
(full position, wage group 13 TV-L)

The positions in the Research Training Group are limited to 3 years for research scientists. In case of a positive development of the individual studies, the positions may be prolonged in order to complete the PhD-thesis.

Starting in October 2009, the Research Training Group is focusing on fundamental research for range sensing, THz- and multi-spectral imaging, as well as for new algorithmic approaches for processing and analysis of mono- and multi-modal data streams delivered by these sensors.

Applicants must be graduated in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or similar (PhD or Master/Diploma) with very good or excellent grade. We expect good English knowledge. The scientific career of the applicant should have a relation to the main topics of the Research Training Group, i. e. to sensorics (optics, range sensing, THz, multi-spectral imaging), sensor data processing (fusion or analysis of mono- and multi-modal data streams, visual analysis) or security (person recognition, material identification and biometrics, information security).

Candidates will be given the opportunity to work on their PhD-thesis.

The University of Siegen is an equal-opportunity employer and seeks to raise the amount of women involved in research and teaching. Thus, the application of adequately qualified women is encouraged. Applications from handicapped persons are encouraged.

The application and selection procedure is web-based. Applications including a curriculum vitae, certificates, two letters of recommendation and a project proposal should be uploaded on the Research Training Group's website www.grk1564.uni-siegen.de until September 30th, 2009. The proposal (approx. 2 pages) should describe the nexus between the individual research interests and the topics of the Research Training Group and it should sketch out possible research directions.

Further information on the Research Training Group and the University of Siegen can be found on the web-site www.grk1564.uni-siegen.de and www.uni-siegen.de, respectively.

Germany : 8 full positions for doctoral candidates

The International Research Training Group "Non-linearities and upscaling in porous media" (NUPUS) of the Universities Stuttgart, Bergen, Delft, Eindhoven, Utrecht and Wageningen is offering

8 full positions for doctoral candidates for 1,5 years with possibility of extension to 3 years (research assistant, TV-L 13)

from January 1st, 2010 / April 1st 2010 in Stuttgart.

NUPUS deals with flow and transport processes in porous media, focusing on environmental and technical applications. For these applications, models must be formulated to simulate coupled non-linear multiphase flow and transport processes. These processes occur on various scales in both space and time and are subject to the structural heterogeneities of porous media on all scales in space. The paramount goal of NUPUS is to derive, develop, implement and verify methods and models that describe complex multiphase flow processes in rigid and deformable porous media in an interdisciplinary research environment. Fundamental research includes the development of stochastic methods and the optimisation of efficient numerical schemes. These will be linked to applied research (methodical and experimental), e.g. the optimisation of fuel cells, the sequestration of CO2 or the prediction of slope failure.

For a description of the research projects, please refer to http://www.nupus.uni-stuttgart.de (Research Areas)

Prerequisites:

  • M.Sc. or Diplom in Civil, Environmental, Chemical or Process Engineering, Computational Science, Mathematics, Physics or neighbouring disciplines with above-average results
  • Applicants are expected to possess a high level of proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Applicants must participate actively in NUPUS (give presentations at seminars, follow courses, assist in the organisation)
  • Applicants are expected to stay at a partner university in the Netherlands or Norway for 6 to 9 months

Please send an application (CV, degree certificates, motivation letter) by September 15th, 2009 to the spokesman of the German side

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Helmig
Lehrstuhl für Hydromechanik und Hydrosystemmodellierung
Universität Stuttgart
Pfaffenwaldring 61
D-70569 Stuttgart

or electronically to Ms. Maria Costa,
maria.costa@iws.uni-stuttgart.de. She can also provide further information.

The Universitaet Stuttgart wishes to increase the proportion of female academic staff and, for this reason, especially welcomes applications from women. Full-time positions can be split. Handicapped persons with the same qualifications will be given preference. The Central Administration is responsible for recruitment.
