The Research School promotes top-level postgraduate education
throughout Ruhr-University Bochum in Germany, offering unique

Guidelines

Target Group

Graduates of all disciplines with a university degree qualifying for doctoral studies.

Requirements

  • we expect your research project to give an important contribution to the corresponding research field (please outline this in a research exposé of 5 pages)

  • clearly above average university degree

  • uninterrupted studies (in case your total study took more than 13 semester/ 6,5 years please give an explanation)

  • as a rule the university degree qualifying for doctoral studies has to be obtained not longer than 12 months ago with reference to the application deadline for the grants - we concede reasonable exceptions (please give an explanation)

  • the university degree qualifying for doctoral studies has to be submitted at the latest until November 13, 2009 before the application will be given to the faculties for further survey and expertise (Bachelor degree in case of fast track procedure plus information about grades already obtained in the master studies)

  • candidates who have to fulfil additional requirements are also allowed to apply for a grant (first supervisor is responsible for compatibility between fulfilment of requirements and successful doctorate)

  • candidates with a Bachelor degree involved in the fast track procedure are also allowed to apply for a grant; the official admission to doctoral studies from the faculty has to be submitted before the funding will start

  • if you are already admitted to doctoral studies at Ruhr-University Bochum please enclose the official admission statement of the faculty to your application

  • if you are not admitted to doctoral studies at Ruhr-University Bochum we need a statement of the faculty that you will be admitted to doctoral studies in case of funding (at the faculty you will realise your research project) if you are invited to the second stage of the admission process

Application

The application form “Grant-Programme” of the Research School has to be used for application. The application form and the corresponding notes for guidance will help you through the application process.

Admission process and decision (2 stage process)

  • a hardcopy of the application form with 2 letters of reference and all necessary documents have to be sent to the Central Coordination Office until October 31, 2009

  • on the basis of the application the faculties and rapporteurs will generate a preliminary ranking of the candidates

  • on the basis of this preliminary ranking the Executive Board will invite the best candidates (end of January 2010) for a research colloquium

  • research colloquium and the ensuing choice and recommendation by the rapporteurs will take place on February 8, 2010

  • the final decision of the Executive Board will be made on Feburary 10, 2010

Type of funding and amount

The grant amounts to 1.000,- Euro per month, children`s allowance amounts to 100,- Euro per month in addition.

Period of funding and of approval

Max. 36 months of funding are provided, whereas the period of first approval comprises 12 months. We offer 2 times for prolongation – each comprising 12 months - after having reviewed your progress report.

Interruption

In case of illness the grant will be paid for further 6 weeks. In case of pregnancy the grant payment will be intermitted for a time period of 14 weeks (6 weeks before and 8 weeks after childbirth). The approval may be extended for this period of time respectively.

Secondary employment

During the funding period a short-time work of max. 6 hours per week is allowed

Duties of the grantee

  • participation in the structured doctoral training programme of the Research School, follow the Individual Training and Supervision Plan of the Research School, take actively part in the Research School

  • communicate immediately all important changes of the personal conditions as well as interruptions, changes or abandonment of the research project

  • adequate use of the grant

The Graduate School Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) Germany, invites applications from outstanding young scientists, in the fields of robotics, computer science, biology, physics, sports sciences, linguistics or psychology, that are willing to contribute to the cross-disciplinary research agenda of CITEC. Both PhD an Post-doc positions are open.

General Description
The Center of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) at Bielefeld University, Germany has been established in the framework of the Excellence Initiative as a research center for intelligent systems and cognitive interaction between humans and technical systems. CITEC's focus is directed towards motion intelligence, attentive systems, situated communication, and memory and learning. Research and development are directed towards understanding the processes and functional constituents of cognitive interaction, and establishing cognitive interfaces that facilitate the use of complex technical systems. The international profile of CITEC fosters the exchange of researchers and students with related scientific institutions. For PhD students, a structured program including taught courses and time for individual research is offered. The integration and active participation in interdisciplinary research projects, which includes access to first class lab facilities, is facilitated by CITEC. For more information, please see: www.cit-ec.de Successful candidates must hold an excellent academic degree (MSc/Diploma/ PhD) in a related discipline, have a strong interest in research, and be proficient in both written and spoken English. Research grants will be given for the duration of three years for PhD students, and one to three years for Postdocs.


Application Requirements All applications should include: a cover letter indicating the motivation and research interests of the candidate, a CV including a list of publications, and relevant certificates of academic qualification. PhD applicants are asked to provide the outline of a PhD project (2-3 pages) and a short abstract. Postdoc researchers are asked to provide the outline of a research project (4-5 pages) relevant to CITEC's research objectives and a short abstract. It is obligatory for Postdoc applicants, and strongly recommended for PhD applicants, to provide two letters of recommendation. In the absence of letters of recommendation, PhD candidates should provide the names and contact details of two referees. All documentation should be submitted in electronic form.

20 PhD Stipends/Fellowships, 6-8 Post-doc Stipends/Fellowships

The Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) invites applications to its Ph.D. and Postdoc program. BIGSSS is an inter-university institute of the University of Bremen (UB) and Jacobs University. 20 PhD and 6-8 Postdoc stipends/fellowships are available at Bremen International Graduate School of Social Science, Germany. Non-German students are strongly encouraged to apply.

The program is funded by the German Excellence Initiative. The program provides close supervision of dissertation work within a demand-tailored education and research framework. BIGSSS is part of an international network of highly acknowledged graduate programs. It supports its Ph.D. and Post-doc Fellows in achieving early scientific independence, provides funds for conducting, presenting and publishing their research. The language of instruction is English.

PhD Fellowships

Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) seeks candidates with strong academic abilities and a Master's degree (or equivalent) in political science, sociology, psychology, law, economics or other social science disciplines. We offer Ph.D. stipends of 1250 euros/month for 36 months, contingent on successful completion of each year.

Postdoc Fellowships

We seek candidates pursuing English-language publication projects either from their dissertation (by making findings available to an international audience through a book or journal article) or from a new project. Postdoc stipends of 1750 euros/month may run from 6 to 24 months. The competition is open to candidates who have received a doctorate in political science, sociology, psychology, law, economics or other social science disciplines within the last 3 years, or who can be expected to finish prior to commencing their post-doc stay.


Research Fields

Successful applicants for the Ph.D. and Post-doc Fellowships will pursue a topic in one of BIGSSS' five Thematic Fields:

  • Global Integration
  • Integration and Diversity in the New Europe
  • Social Integration and the Welfare State
  • Attitude Formation, Value Change and Intercultural Communication
  • Life-Course and Lifespan Dynamics.


PhD fellowships will start on 1st September 2009, Post-docs may start later. Non-German students are strongly encouraged to apply. BIGSSS strives to increase the share of women in the university and hence also strongly encourages women to apply. Applicants with disabilities who are equally qualified will be favored.
