PhD Studentship, Fisheries/Environmental Geostatistics, Ireland

PhD Studentship, Fisheries/Environmental Geostatistics, CMRC, University College Cork, Ireland

A funded PhD studentship to participate in research funded under the EU FP 7 Coralfish Project is available. This project will conduct an assessment of the interaction between cold water corals, fish and fisheries, in order to develop monitoring and predictive modelling tools for ecosystem based management in the deep waters of Europe and beyond.

Deadline : 16 January 2009

The successful applicant will work on developing tools for identifying and mapping areas likely to contain essential/preferred fish habitat. The main focus of this research will be on the use of geostatistical analytical techniques and simulations to investigate the relationships between fish population distributions and environmental parameters. (See http://eu-fp7-coralfish.net/fish_habitat_utilisation_WP7.php for further information).

The candidate will benefit from working in conjunction with staff in the Geomatics & Marine Ecology teams at the Coastal and Marine Resources Centre, UCC, and will be formally supervised by Dr Michael Cronin in the Department of Statistics, School of Mathematical Sciences, UCC. The appointment will be for 3 years and the gross stipend will be €20k per annum. In addition fees will be covered for EU candidates and a travel budget is available for presenting outcomes at international conferences.

Requirements

Ideally the successful candidate will possess a Masters or equivalent degree, in addition to an honours degree (Grade 2.1 or higher), in a biological science/mathematical sciences/geomatics discipline. To be considered for interview, candidates must have demonstrated numerate skills and aptitude in geostatistical techniques, as well as experience of working with large spatio-temporal datasets and Geographic Information Systems. An interest in fisheries management is highly desirable.
