Research Positions, Zukunftskolleg - University of Konstanz

The University of Konstanz is one of the nine Universities of Excellence in the Federal Republic of Germany. The Zukunftskolleg is a central scientific institution of the University of Konstanz for the promotion of young scientists.

We are offering 5 Research Positions (Salary Scale 14 TV-L - Reference number 2009/130)

for the development and implementation of individual research projects/research groups. The initial appointments will commence on April 1, 2010 and end on September 30, 2011. An extension of the work contract for an additional 3.5 years will be financed by the Zukunftskolleg, provided, that substantial external third-party funding for a research project has been granted. 

The Zukunftskolleg provides a professional infrastructure and an appropriate
workplace for conducting research. A pool for funding cooperative projects, research assistants, research trips and the acquisition of equipment is available.

Additionally, fellows may nominate recognized experts in their field of research as senior fellows, who will be invited to Konstanz for a period of 3-12 months and who, in addition to their research work, will advise young scientists in the Zukunftskolleg. The prerequisites for acceptance are a doctoral degree and outstanding scientific qualification as documented by research activities and publications. 

The ideal candidate has just finished her /his dissertation or has acquired initial work experience as a postdoctoral researcher. International experience in teach ing or research and a strong interest in interdisciplinary topics are desirable. Each fellow is a member of both a department of the university and the Zukunftskolleg.
Involvement in teaching is possible. The foreseen topical connection of the project to the research profile of the University of Konstanz should be demonstrated in the project outline.

Description
Heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias) are prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality. The general goal of our research is to better understand the fundamental mechanisms leading to altered propagation of the electrical excitation (action potential) in cardiac tissue. Our interdisciplinary approach involves experiments (cardiac cell cultures grown on microelectrode arrays) and mathematical modeling (computer simulations of the action potential).
Research project: Propagation velocity and action potential duration depend on one or several previous diastolic or interbeat intervals. This dependence, called "restitution", is involved in the generation of arrhythmias. Our aim is to explore restitution by pacing cardiac tissue using innovative protocols during which pacing intervals vary from beat to beat, and by developing novel analyses to extract quantitative information regarding restitution parameters and their involvement in arrhythmia generation.
The project is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The presence of other cardiac electrophysiology research groups in our Department of Physiology and our integration in the Swiss Cardiovascular Research and Training Network provides the opportunity for many collaborations and scientific exchange.


Education
A doctoral degree is required (as this is a postdoctoral position).


Capacities in mathematics and computer programming (e.g., C/C++, Matlab, IDL) and the motivation to apply these skills for the analysis of experimental data and for the development of models represent a major advantage.

Postdoc positions in University of Lausanne, Switzerland

BIO INFORMATICS POSTDOC POSITIONS – MAMMALIAN TRANSCRIPTOME EVOLUTION

Center for Integrative Genomics, University of Lausanne, Switzerland

Three postdoctoral positions (2 years with possible extensions up to 5 years) are available in the evolutionary genomics group of Henrik Kaessmann in the framework of major new projects funded by the European Research Council.

We are seeking highly qualified and motivated applicants with strong skills in computational biology/bioinformatics, preferably also with experience in data mining and comparative or evolutionary genome analysis.

Our group has been interested in a range of topics related to the functional evolution of genomes from primates (e.g., emergence of new genes and their functions) and other mammals (e.g., the origin and evolution of mammalian sex chromosomes). In the framework of a new major line of projects funded by the European Research Council, a large amount of qualitative and quantitative transcriptome data will be produced for a unique collection of tissues from representative mammals by the wet lab unit of the group using next generation sequencing technologies (RNA-Seq). The postdoctoral fellow will perform integrated evolutionary/bioinformatics analyses based on these data and available mammalian genomes. The specific project will be developed together with the candidate.

The language of the institute is English, and its members form an international group that is rapidly expanding. The institute is located in Lausanne, a beautiful city at Lake Geneva.
