Program Description

The sector Furore (Physics of the Urinary tract) of the department of Urology, Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, is a partner in the European Marie Curie International Training Network (http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/mariecurieactions/itn_en.html) TRUST (Training for urology scientists to develop new treatments). TRUST is an interdisciplinary research network of 8 European university institutes and 3 enterprises, with a wide variety of expertise in urology and physics.

Furore has a vacancy for a PhD student applied physics or comparable

The research program of the sector Furore concentrates on modeling of the urinary tract and clinical applications. Models are developed on the basis of physical and (electro)physiological measurements in single smooth muscle cells, muscle bundles and complete organ systems in vitro and in vivo. The models are clinically applied in new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. (Dys)function of the urinary tract is diagnosed quantitatively and new treatment modalities are evaluated. Automated analysis of clinical data and non invasive diagnostic methods are important issues.

Based on measurements of nerve signals in anesthetised rats, a model is developed of the nervous control system of the urinary bladder and urethra. The aims of the project are to use nerve stimulators to suppress involuntary contractions of the bladder (which may cause incontinence) and to evoke a natural bladder emptying in paraplegic patients. Previous results are presented in :
http://vlin1.ubib.eur.nl/search/?query=feber%

The PhD student will record the nerve signals in the animals (Labview®), analyze these signals and develop a model of the control system (Matlab®). Results will be published in international journals and presented at international meetings.

Netherlands: PhD Position on Light-weight crypto primitives

CTIT, University of Twente, the Netherlands  PhD Research Position on Light-weight crypto primitives

The Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT) is a   multidisciplinary research institute of the University of Twente,    Enschede, The Netherlands. CTIT coordinates the research activities in    all the areas relevant to the development, the introduction and the    usage of information technology systems.
http://www.ctit.utwente.nl/

The research topic of the PhD student will be to design secure symmetric    cryptographic primitives and/or secure protocols (suitable for such   primitives) which use limited resources. Design of crypto algorithms for
such constrained environments adds additional not security related but   equally important requirements to the design process.Examples are gate   equivalence of the hardware implementation and its power consumption or   agility, throughput, etc. In order to achieve them often difficult   tradeoffs have to be made as well as the appropriate security level has   to be chosen for the particular application. Because the security level   is usually optimized up to the edge the design of such symmetric crypto   algorithms and protocols is a very challenging task.

UK: Phd position in Novel therapeutic vectors

Uveal melanoma has been chosen as a model to engineer a highly innovative immunological vaccine, which can be readily adapted to other cancers. In order to trigger immunity via antigen presenting cells, the team has identified HLA-DR1 and HLA-DR4 restricted peptides derived from Tyrosinase and p53 as novel immunogenic antigens. Unfortunately, peptides on their own show low immunogenicity. This project will look to assess and optimise immunisation strategies using a novel peptide vaccine delivery system constructed from nanoengineered scaffolds. The results from this study will provide a highly innovative approach to the formulation and delivery of immunotherapeutic cancer vaccines.

Netherlands : PhD/postdoc in History

Application Deadline: June 3, 2010*

The International Institute of Social History (IISH) is the world's largest documentation and research centre in the field of social history. Since its foundation in 1935, the institute has dedicated itself to the collection, preservation and availability of the heritage of social movements worldwide. The institute is independent and reliable, which makes it a natural depository of the frequently threatened cultural heritage of the labour movement and other emancipatory groups and currents. The research department of the institute focuses on the history of labour relations and organizes international projects in this field. The collection (archives, library and audio-visual materials) takes up well over 30 miles of shelf room. The IISH is an institute that comes under the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

The International Institute of Social History is looking for a

PhD Student (f/m)
(38 hours per week)

A four years PhD grant has been offered by The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to a junior researcher affiliated to the International Institute of Social History (IISH) to write a doctoral dissertation on the social history of labour in the Iranian oil industry and participate in the IISH's activities.

And a Postdoctoral Fellow (f/m) (38 hours per week)

A two years postdoctoral fellowship grant has been offered by The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to a recently PhD defended researcher affiliated to the International Institute of Social History to write a manuscript on the social history of labour in the Iranian oil industry and participate in the IISH's activities.

Project information
The International Institute of Social History has launched a grand project on the centurial social history of labour in the Iranian oil industry, studied by a team of five PhD and Post-Doctoral researchers. The purpose of this project is to develop a social history of labour in the Iranian oil industry during hundred years since its discovery in the southern region of Iran.

The discovery of oil in Iran in 1908 created new social, political, economic and even cultural realities at local, national, regional and international levels. Now a century on, Iran's geopolitical role and significance continue to grow. In many fundamental ways, the commodity oil, and those producing it, has played a central role in shaping a model of development, of social mores and behaviours, of political and social relations in Iran, and beyond.

The oil industry in Iran has been formed within the network of several intertwined formative relations that have undergone major changes over the course of the twentieth century. Labour relations in Iran, especially in this key industrial sector, have been crafted by a series of changing relations between the national state and a major colonial entity (1908-1954), between the national state and a consortium of multinationals (1954-79), between the national state and the local and national labour force employed in the industry, and between the oil company and its
employees. These relations have, therefore, affected both labour formation and labour relations in substantially diverse ways and levels, at different historical junctures. Evidently, workers' everyday life has immensely influenced their aspirations and activities, both collectively and individually.

The applicants are expected to focus their investigation and analysis on all aspects of labour analysis such as labour formation, relations, migration, composition, mobility, integrations, activism, and living conditions inside and outside of the industrial towns, housing, nutrition, hygiene, health and leisure within a specific period. This study also takes into account the relationship between organised and unorganised labour on the one hand and religion, culture and ethnicity on the other throughout the period under review.

Job requirements
The PhD Student applicant should:
- have a MA degree in history, sociology or other social sciences with a strong interest in social and cultural history;

The topic of the 2010 PhD summer school is Social Networking

The PhD summer school on the political economy information and communication
technologies focuses on social networking in 2010. Internet-based communities have existed for more than 20 years, but during the past few years, social networking has become widespread. Worldwide, people connect via the web and extend their social communities beyond what could ever have been realized without the web.

Till now, users of web-based social networking and communities have mainly used traditional computers with large screens. For many users the concept of social networking means always-on, which sets focus on the trend of being able to do social networking also on smart phones and other smaller screens. The transition from the big screen to the small screen in relation to social networking and communities will be one of the issues examined at the PhD summer school. The summer school will concentrate on the interrelationships between the technological, economic, political, and cultural aspects of social networking.

Issues that will be dealt with at the summer school include:
· User generated content and applications
· Mobility and social networks
· Privacy and trust in social networks
· Standards and technical platforms
· New services and applications for mobile devices facilitating social networks
· Business models for social networks
· Regulatory aspects of social networks

The summer school is organized in cooperation with CTIF (Centre for TeleInFrastructure), the CAMMP project (Converged Advanced Mobile Media Platform), and is part of the activities of the Mobile and Wireless Cluster (KMT) located at CMI.

Aim and objectives of the summer school

The aim of the course is to refine the level of knowledge of the participating Ph.D. students on the economic and political structures and mechanisms affecting technology development in the information and communication technology (ICT) area. It also considers the impact of implementation and application of ICTs on the economy and broader social developments. It is a course in the political economy of technology
development with a disciplinary point of departure in economics and social science. This theme is explored at a company (micro), sectoral (meso) and/or societal (macro) level. This will depend on the specific topics chosen in the course. The course targets Ph.D. students with a technology background combined with an economics and/or social science approach and students with an economics and /or social science background focusing on technology development.

Best regards
