USA: Postdoctoral Fellowships in Humanities and Social Sciences

The University of Pittsburgh School of Arts and Sciences Announces a New Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for 2011 For the first time, the University of Pittsburgh School of Arts and Sciences is offering up to eight postdoctoral fellowships in the humanities and social sciences to begin in January 2011. These inaugural fellowships are designed to attract excellent scholars from outside the University of Pittsburgh and to offer junior scholars the time, space, and financial support necessary to produce significant scholarship early in their careers.

The Arts and Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowships are for one year and are renewable for an additional year. Fellows will teach two courses per year, complete scholarly work, and participate in the academic and intellectual community of the School of Arts and Sciences and the department or program with which they are affiliated. The fellowship
offers junior scholars the time, space, and financial support necessary to produce significant scholarship early in their careers. The annual stipend will be $45,000. Fellows will receive an annual research fund of $3,500 and a one-time reimbursement of up to $1,500 for moving expenses.

We invite applications from qualified candidates in the humanities and social sciences who have received the PhD from outside of the University of Pittsburgh between December 1, 2007 and November 30, 2010. Applicants who do not have the PhD in hand at the time of application must provide a letter from the Department Chair or the Advisor stating that the PhD degree will be conferred before the term of the fellowship begins.

CEU Business School Baku MINI MBA Program

The CEU Business School Baku MINI MBA Program is a joint project of CEU Business School and the Azerbaijan Marketing Society (AMS).

The objective of the project is to provide a high quality management training program for managers who already have some managerial experience and are candidates for higher positions. The goal is to update and enhance their management knowledge on the most important management fields. The program also allows graduate students of the information and communication universities to continue their education and get the MINI MBA degree offered by CEU-AMS Alliance.

The CEU Business School Baku MINI MBA Program is modular and run on Friday afternoons and Saturdays. Total length is approximately 72 classroom hours. The modules are to be planned and delivered by CEU BS faculty members, cooperating with local experts when necessary and possible. Working language is English but some local contributors may use Russian as well. Each participant gets a complete course package with readings, slides, handouts etc. at the beginning of the program.

A certificate is provided at the end jointly issued by CEU BS-AMS Alliance to those who pass exams successfully and their participation measured by time spent on the program reaches 80%.

6-week program consists of 6 modules:

Taiwan: Master’s Program in Health Care

International Master's Program in Health Care Administration

School of Health Care Administration was founded in 1997 to cultivate reputable staffs and leaders for the medical organization as well as raise the standard of Taiwan's health care administration and academic research in the field. The master program was established in 2000, and provides the chances to make progress and broaden global visions for at-work health care administrators. As health care systems expand rapidly in Taiwan, the administration leaders with expertise in professional management become increasingly demanded. Practical experience in local hospitals or international organizations is required by all students prior to graduation. The International Master's Program in Health Care Administration offers interdisciplinary courses in English provided by several schools or graduate institutes at Taipei Medical University - School of Health Care Administration, Graduate Institute of Biomedical Informatics, School of Nutrition and Health Sciences, Graduate Institute of Injury Prevention and Control, and Graduate Institute of Humanities in Medicine. Netherland: PhD position in Directed evolution of tautomerases

Within the PROZYMES project, the University of Groningen is looking for 3 PhD students and 2 postdocs in biocatalysis research. PROZYMES (proline-based enzymes) is funded by a Starting Independent Researcher Grant from the European Research Council (ERC-2009-StG) and aims to develop a new class of biocatalysts for carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions to yield valuable chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Subproject: Directed evolution of tautomerases. This subproject aims to use tautomerases that show promiscuous carbon-carbon bond-forming activities (e.g., aldolase, alkylation or Michael addition activities) in directed evolution experiments to enhance their activity to a practical level. On basis of molecular modelling studies and available structures, target positions in or close to the enzyme's active site will be identified, which will be randomized by PCR methods. Subsequently, improved variants will be obtained by medium/high-throughput screening. Gene shuffling will be used to combine the best mutations and generate superior biocatalysts that rival or complement chemical and organocatalysts. The properties of the final tailor-made enzymes will be characterized in detail, including kinetic and pH studies, substrate range, product identity and chirality, potential substrate and product inhibition, and temperature stability. Crystallographic studies of the best laboratory-evolved enzymes will be carried out to establish structure-function relationships. Supervisor: Dr. G.J. Poelarends.

Benefits

The University of Groningen offers a salary of minimal € 2,042 gross a month in the first year to maximal € 2,612 a month in the final year based on a full-time position. It is a temporary assignment for a period of 4 years. First you will get a temporary position of 1.5 years with the perspective of prolongation with another 2.5 years. After the first year, there will be an evaluation as to the feasibility of successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next three years. Norway : PhD position in Theoretical Astrophysics

The Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. It presently has 12 permanent professors/associate professors. The Institute employs about 8 postdoctoral research fellows and has about 14 Ph.D. students. The research activity of the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics is concentrated around solar physics and cosmology (http://www.astro.uio.no/).

The fellowship is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work. Starting date no later than 1 October, 2010.

Job description

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has appointed the cosmology group of the Institute as an emerging top-tier research group. The participation in the European Space Agency's flagship mission Planck and the ground based CMB polarization experiment QUIET, and a strong effort in fundamental cosmological theory, act as two foci for consolidating the group and developing it further to become one of Norway's internationally most visible research groups in the physical sciences. The PhD research fellow will work on data analysis for the QUIET CMB polarization experiment, designed to understand the physical processes acting in the very early universe during the inflationary epoch. This work requires interest and skills in physics, programming, statistics and informatics, or at least a strong motivation to acquire these skills during the studies. The applicant must attach a self-written computer program to the application.

Applicants may submit a project proposal for the qualifying work during the program. The projet proposal should include research topic, main issues, as well as choice of theory and method.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in astronomy/astrophysics, cosmology or a related subject.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Applications are invited for a Marie Curie Research Fellow in the Reproductive Biology Group, School of Medicine, reference 5431, to work on an FP7 Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) project. The aim is to develop and apply techniques to study DNA/protein interactions and histone modifications in human disease samples to identify gene targets and molecular pathways that distinguish the activity of antiestrogens from estrogens in breast and endometrium, The successful candidate will take a lead role in the implementation of techniques including Chromatin Immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and DNA methylation detection to formalin fixed, paraffin-embedded human tissue samples.


The successful candidate will join a team of researchers investigating the impact of aberrant transcription processes in the endometrium on infertility and gynaecological cancer. due to abnormalities through The candidate will contribute to a major aim of the group in  developing biomarkers for clinical use.


The successful applicant will be based in the £50 million Institute for Life Sciences (ILS) at Swansea University, where interdisciplinary research will be fostered, particularly within Cancer Research and Reproductive Sciences.  The successful applicant will also work with project partners in the Department of Pathology in the adjacent Singleton Hospital, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board.

This position is supported by the EU Marie Curie programme, and candidates can be a national of a Member State, Associated country or Third country. Further, the researcher must not be a UK national and must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc) in the UK for more than 12 months in the previous 3 years, or if a UK national must have spent at least 3 of the previous 4 years outside of the UK.


Applicants must have a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology or a related discipline and must have knowledge of Epigenetic regulation of Transcription and experience of ChIP methodology.. The candidate must be skilled at developing and working with innovative techniques. The FP7 grant work will be performed in collaboration with Active Motif SA, Belgium, so the candidate must be able to develop effective working relationships with external collaborators.

Switzerland :Open PhD Positions in Computer Graphics

Two full time PhD positions, starting summer 2010, are open at the Computer Vision and Geometry Group of ETH Zurich and at the Computer Graphics and Geometry Laboratory of EPFL Lausanne.


The Institute of Cartography of ETH Zurich, the Computer Vision and Geometry Group of ETH Zurich, and the Computer Graphics and Geometry Laboratory of EPFL Lausanne collaborate in developing new digital methods for cartographic terrain visualization in both 2D and 3D. We concentrate on new methods for generating panorama maps, distorted 2D terrain maps, shaded relief maps, non-photorealistic rock drawing and hatched 3D representations. We plan to apply and develop methods of morphometric terrain analysis, non-linear optimization for shape deformation, and image-based modeling and rendering. Switzerland : Ph.D. in Faculty of Informatics

Ireland : PhD Studentship in Dynamic Network Analysis, Mining and Modelling

The Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) at the National University of Ireland Galway is seeking applications for a funded PhD studentship in Dynamic Network Analysis, Mining and Modelling.



The successful candidate will join the Clique Strategic Research Cluster in DERI at NUI Galway. Clique is a Science Foundation Ireland funded research cluster addressing the development of analytical, modelling and visualisation techniques for large scale, dynamic graphs and networks. The cluster is distributed between DERI and University College Dublin, and has industry partners such as IBM. The DERI group conducts fundamental algorithmic work as well as investigating and modelling the principles underlying the evolution and interactions in large social, communication and collaborative networks. Areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Analysing user roles in social networks and designing efficient algorithms to find these [1];
  • Analysing and modelling the interactions between online communities [2];
  • Formulating predictive models for information diffusion in social and collaborative networks;
  • Designing efficient graph algorithms to find evolving communities with correlated change behaviour [3];
  • Designing scalable, distributed, real-time algorithms to tackle problems in massive dynamic graph datasets;

    The successful candidate should have at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, maths, science or engineering, and have the pre-requisites for PhD studies at NUI Galway. The PhD studentship covers academic fees, a generous monthly stipend and a research travel allowance for a three year period.

    In addition, the following criteria are desirable but not necessary:

     

    • Familiarity with graph algorithms and theory (e.g., finding connected components efficiently);
    • Familiarity with modelling and simulation;
    • Familiarity with social network analysis;
    • Familiarity with large-scale, distributed, dynamic data analysis (e.g., data streaming algorithms);
    • Familiarity with data mining, feature selection and machine learning, especially graph mining and graph grammars;
    • Masters or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline or topic

    The successful candidate will work with the DERI Principle Investigator, Dr. Conor Hayes, Dr. Jeffrey Chan and Dr. Marcel Karnstedt in DERI, Galway. There will be extensive opportunities for collaboration with other Clique researchers and with other research groups and projects in DERI.     USA: Research position in Compiler Optimization

    Cray has an opening for a motivated and skilled software developer to join its Compiler group.
    The Compiler Optimization Engineer will work on improving the optimization and parallelization
    phases of the Cray Fortran, C, and C++ compilers. This includes both significant research and
    product development activities, as Cray continues to advance the state of the art of its compiler
    across dissimilar architectures.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    This work includes the design and implementation of new compiler-based optimizations,
    enhancing existing optimizations, the implementation of new high-level language features,
    adapting evolving programming models to Cray architectures, and working to improve the overall
    quality of the compiler.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • B.S. Computer Science, Electrical and Computing Engineering, or similar discipline is
    required. Advanced degrees are welcome.
    • At least 5 years experience in compiler development or equivalent combination of
    education and experience, particularly with regard to compiler optimization.
    • Background in high performance computing (HPC) architectures, including
    multiprocessors, distributed memory systems, and GPU accelerators, is highly desired.
    • Proficiency writing in C is critical, and familiarity with C++ is desired.
    • Knowledge of Fortran is a plus.
    • Experience in working with large projects, or an advanced thesis in an appropriate area.
    • Commitment to sound software engineering principles, outstanding problem solving
    skills, ability to work well in a cooperative development environment, both within and
    across teams, and good written and verbal communications skills.
    • Must be motivated to have an impact on our products, our company, and the state of
    the art.

    France: PhD position in GeoPhysics

    The Geophysical team of the Centre de Géosciences at Mines-ParisTech in Fontainebleau has a position for
    a PhD in geophysics (3 years) for a gifted young student on the following subject:
    Near surface characterization using surface waves

    Description : The research context of the PhD thesis is the geophysical exploration, whose aim is the study of the Earth subsurface by exploiting and analyzing the properties of seismic/elastic waves which are reflected by the subsurface in-homogeneities and recorded at the surface. The provided subsurface characterization is crucial for the petroleum industry to find oil and gas traps.

    In the context of hydrocarbon exploration, the seismic techniques that are traditionally more diffused are based on body-wave propagation, in particular P-wave reflections, since these waves spread energy into the Earth's interior and carry on interesting information about the deep subsurface. On the contrary surface waves, which represent about 67% of the propagating seismic energy, are usually considered as coherent noise to be removed or attenuated. However, the properties of surface waves depend on the elastic parameters of the shallow subsurface, whose lateral variations and heterogeneities strongly affect surface wave propagation.

    The objective of the PhD research is to investigate innovative techniques for extracting and using all the relevant information content of surface waves, before removing them from the acquired seismic data. The inversion of surface wave properties contributes to the creation of a near-surface model. For hydrocarbon exploration, proper knowledge of the near surface would allow to improve model building at the exploration target depth, as well as the quality of seismic data processing.

    While most of the traditional approaches generate a 1D model, the PhD project aims at extending actual methods to yield a 2D model of the near-surface. For the 2D inversion, it will be worthwhile to analyze first which of the model parameters are actually influenced by the surface wave propagation. This sensitivity analysis would allow the introduction in the inverse problem of novel kinds of independent information, such as the higher modes of surface waves and the polarization parameters, in order to increase the reliability and to better constraint the inversion result.

    Candidate profile:

    The candidate must have a research master degree in physics, geophysics or applied mathematics, and be interested in seismic signal processing and seismic imaging. The candidate should also have experience in programming. Good knowledge of English is essential.

    Our laboratory focuses on understanding the inflammatory signaling pathways (e.g. cytokines and chemokines) and cellular mechanisms responsible for the induction and maintenance of chronic inflammation, finally leading to tissue destruction and cancer (e.g. chronic hepatitis induced liver cancer).

    International Masters Scholarship Scheme 

    The University has up to 15 full tuition-fee merit-based scholarships for International students commencing taught Masters programmes starting in October 2010. 

    These scholarships are open to applicants interested in programmes from the following Schools only.

    •Geography (two available - one each for the Exeter and Cornwall campuses)

    All of these awards are aimed at International students with high academic ability (typically at least an upper second class honours or international equivalent). Applicants who require pre-sessional English will be considered but will have a lower priority for an award than those applicants who already satisfy the University's English language requirements.
