Three-year PhD studentship in marine palaeoclimatology, Spain

PhD studentship in marine palaeoclimatology at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. One PhD position (3 yrs) is available at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. We seek a candidate with a dedicated interest in the marine sciences and climatology/palaeo-climatology; dexterity in laboratory analytical work is expected.

International Ph.D. Programs in the Life Sciences

The Life Science Zurich Graduate School houses several highly competitive Ph.D. programs, run jointly by the ETH urich and the University of Zurich. This three year studentship is part of a 3.5 year ESRC Large Grant 'Poverty and Social Exclusion in the United Kingdom' which aims to improve the measurement of poverty and social exclusion, and to inform understanding of changes in the nature and extent of poverty and social exclusion since the 1999 survey.� This project will involve over 30 staff at six Universities (Bristol, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, Open, Queen's (Belfast) and York) and two survey organisations (National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA)), plus many survey field staff.� For further details see: www.poverty.ac.uk

The PhD studentship will draw upon survey data generated by the current study, together with earlier national poverty surveys conducted since 1968/9, in order to generate longitudinally consistent data on trends in poverty and social exclusion at an individual and household level. This project will contribute to our understanding of changes in the social and demographic profile of poverty over this period and how this relates to wider dimensions of disadvantage and the policies intended to tackle it. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to the wider project, and to work closely with the wider research team.

Ph.D. Studentship, Statistical methods in the economic evaluation of health subvention

We have one three or four-year studentship joint funded by the MRC and the University of Bristol, to allow study of statistical methods in the economic evaluation of health interventions.

Two possible projects, to be supervised by Drs Chris Metcalfe & Will Hollingworth:

[1] The net benefit regression framework for estimating cost effectiveness in randomised controlled trials.

Incremental net benefit is a measure of cost-effectiveness that can be estimated using standard regression models. Consequently there is the potential to take those statistical methods developed within the regression framework and apply them to cost-effectiveness analysis. For example, it may be possible to obtain an unbiased estimate of cost-effectiveness in those patients who adhere to their allocated treatment, and to obtain accurate standard errors for data collected in cluster randomised trials.

[2] Optimising the statistical precision of economic evaluations conducted alongside randomised controlled trials.

The sample sizes of randomised controlled trials are almost always based on achieving statistical power for comparisons of clinical outcome rather than comparisons of cost-effectiveness. It is often assumed that randomised controlled trials are severely underpowered on economic outcomes, but there is little empirical evidence to substantiate this. Potential elements of this project include a post hoc examination of statistical power to detect an important difference in cost-effectiveness in published trials, and a prospective study predicting statistical precision in cost-effectiveness estimates based on pilot cost-effectiveness data.

The successful applicant will be based at the School of Social and Community Medicine at the University of Bristol, and will work within the MRC funded ConDuCT hub for clinical trials methodology research. The four-year studentship allows a year of training in clinical trials research for a student moving from a different area of application.

Postdoc and Junior-researcher Positions in Semantic Search, Linked Data, and Adaptive Web

The Web Information Systems group in TU Delft (Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands) concentrates in its research on large-scale information systems, specifically information systems that involve Web and Semantic Web technology. Main topics in the group's research activities are:

- engineering and science of the adaptive web, including semantics-based adaptation and personalization,
- semantic search and retrieval,
- semantic integration and linked data.

The objective is the development of and experimentation with techniques for semantic search, creation and use of linked data, and adaptive web applications. Candidates should have a solid background in Computer Science or related disciplines and be interested in Web and Semantic Web technology. 

They should have good communicative skills in English, both in speaking and in writing, and candidates are expected to realize research ideas in terms of software tools. Applications are invited for Postdoc positions as well as Junior-researcher positions on one or more of the above topics. The group offers the chance to perform high-quality and cutting-edge research in an international environment. Successful candidates will work in European and/or national projects, in close collaboration with the members of the WIS group.

The position of postdoc is available for a period of 1 year with the possibility to extend, depending on the fit with specific projects. The postdoc candidate should have a relevant background and experience in the field, demonstrated by a PhD and publications, and is expected to help lead junior-researchers, PhD-students and MSc-students perform their research. 

Postdoc candidates will have the opportunity to perform independent research on the topics of the group, which qualifies them for an academic career and allows them to establish themselves as an independent researcher in the research community.

The position of junior-researcher is available for candidates with a relevante MSc-degree for a period of at least 6 months, preferably 1 year. The junior-researcher candidate should have a relevant background in research and software development, with an MSc in Computer Science or related disciplines, and is expected to assist in the group's research mainly in tool development. Junior-researcher candidates will receive guidance and support in developing the necessary skills to produce high-quality research necessary to earn a PhD degree: depending on the performance and the fit with projects, a junior-researcher candidate could become a PhD-student in the group.

Overview
The PhD Programme in Innovative Strategies in Biomedical Research is characterized by a significant multisciplinary connotation, where the experimental approach focusing on cellular and subcellular mechanisms combines with the physiological and physiopathological analysis of the organism as a whole, and is also relevant to medical issues. A special emphasis will be placed on molecular biology both in its basic approach and in its clinical application approach.

4 PhD Studentships in Advanced Quantum and Classical Molecular Simulation, Dublin

4 Science Foundation Ireland funded four year PhD studentships in advanced Classical and Quantum molecular simulation are available in the group of Professor Giovanni Ciccotti (GC) at the School of Physics, University College Dublin, Ireland to commence September 1 2009.

Each PhD student will work directly with a Post-doctoral researcher and international visitors expert in his/her chosen thesis topic as well as with Prof. Ciccotti. He or she will be expected to attend advanced specialised courses and research workshops in Ireland and Europe, and on occasion North America through the Atlantic Centre for Atomistic Modelling - ACAM and the European Centre for Atomistic and Molecular Computations - CECAM network of which ACAM is a node.

Each thesis topic comes out of collaborations with Italian, French, German and US laboratories (e.g. MIT; U. Texax at Austin; Courant Institue, NY; Free Univ. of Berlin; etc). The research topics may also include growing collaborations with experimentalists based in Ireland and elsewhere.

The research-thesis topics for each position are:
Bio-Physics: Molecular Dynamics study of the allosteric transition in Hemoglobin, and Ligand Binding on Myoglobin;
ICT & Nano-Materials: Soft Matter & Rheology - Nano-imprinting;
Energy and the Environment: Long-term storage of CO2 in natural gas hydrates, and Hydrogen storage in solid state materials;
Energy and the Environment: Mixed quantum-classical simulations of hydrogen in ethanol and methanol-fed fuel cells.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Your primary duty will be to work efficiently and full time on your chossen research topic, so as to complete your PhD thesis within four years.

You will work collaboratively with the rest of the group and its research visitors.
In the event that for unforseen scientific reasons a research topic has to be changed significantly, you will engage constructively with GC on the neccessery changes.
On occasion you may be requested to perform additional very light duties, such as helping a member of the group on a different research topic or piece of computer code, or organization of an international research meeting.

Selection Criteria: 
Mandatory:
A high level of personal drive, stamina and curiosity required to complete a PhD degree Equivalent of a first class or upper second honours undergraduate degree or a Masters degree in theoretical physics/chemistry/biophysics/applied mathematics/engineering.
A good knowledge of statistical mechanics or classical mechanics.
A good knowledge of a scientific programming language such as C/C++/Fortran and the willingness to combine algorithm development and statistical mechanics in your research.
A knowledge of spoken and written English adequate to work in an English Speaking Environment.
The Inter-personal skills required to work productively as part of a research team
Desirable:
Working knowledge/experience of molecular simulation.
Good knowledge of electronic structure/solid state physics.

International Ph.D. Programs in the Life Sciences

The Life Science Zurich Graduate School houses several highly competitive Ph.D. programs, run jointly by the ETH urich and the University of Zurich. Each program offers research and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree. Accepted
students perform their research project in one of the participating research groups of their favorite program, according to their scientific interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are offered throughout the curriculum. The program language is English throughout. Ph.D. studies usually last 3-4 years.

Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a Masters degree or equivalent from a university in a relevant field before starting the Ph.D. program. Denmark : Ph.D. Scholarship-Grid integration of offshore wind farms

At the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, Department of Energy Technology a position as Ph.D. fellow (position no. 562/06-14-10014) is open for appointment from 15.6.2010.

The stipend is available within the general study programme "Electrical and Electronic Engineering".

The Norwegian Centre for Offshore Wind Energy (NORCOWE), mainly funded by Norwegian Research Council, is an interdisciplinary resource centre for the exploitation of offshore wind energy as a natural sustainable energy source. Key players in the development of Norwegian offshore technology join forces with leading Danish and international communities on onshore and shallow water wind energy to define the future state of the art in the field of offshore wind energy technology. NORCOWE will take the lead in the development of new innovative and cost efficient solutions for the exploitation of offshore wind energy at large water depths and in harsh offshore environments.

The PhD project, being funded by the NORCOWE and Aalborg University is related to two Working Tasks specified by the NORCOWE.

In the PhD project 'Grid integration of offshore wind farms' focus is on the grid security and stability with large scale wind power penetration. The PhD project will study the characteristic of large-scale wind farms interaction with power systems, analyze steady-state and transient impacts. The methods and strategies will be developed to meet the technical challenges under normal operation as well as abnormal situations, such as storms and power system faults and to ensure good quality of frequency and voltage, and reduce the risk of system collapse and blackout.

Qualification requirements:
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation. 

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

Italy : European Master in Informatics

Degree certificates

The EuMI School can accept only students who already have a first level degree.
Students who have not yet completed their first degree, but who predict to graduate before August 31, 2010, can apply to EuMI. If selected, their admission will be conditional on the receipt of the degree certificate by EuMI not later than August 31, 2010.

English (IELTS/TOEFL/CAE) certificates

Fluent written and spoken English, certified (certificate not older than 2008) by either an IELTS score of at least 6.0, a TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based) / 217 (computer-based) / 81 (internet-based) or CAE score of at least C; students with higher English scores (IELTS 6.5; TOEFL 580 / 237 / 88; CAE B or A) will be preferred. Netherlands: Marie Curie PhD position in physics applied to medicine and biology

Overview 

The sector Furore (Physics of the Urinary tract) of the department of Urology, Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, is a partner in the European Marie Curie International Training Network TRUST. Furore has a vacancy for a four year PhD student applied physics or comparable. This position is open for students who are not a national of the Netherlands, and who are in the first four years of their research career.

The research program of the sector Furore concentrates on modeling of the urinary tract and clinical applications. Based on measurements of nerve signals in anesthetised rats, the PhD will develop a model of the nervous control system of the urinary bladder and urethra. The aims of the project are to use nerve stimulators to suppress involuntary contractions of the bladder (which may cause incontinence) and to evoke a natural bladder emptying in paraplegic patients.

Furore has a vacancy for a PhD student applied physics or comparable

The research program of the sector Furore concentrates on modeling of the urinary tract and clinical applications. Models are developed on the basis of physical and (electro)physiological measurements in single smooth muscle cells, muscle bundles and complete organ systems in vitro and in vivo. The models are clinically applied in new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. (Dys)function of the urinary tract is diagnosed quantitatively and new treatment modalities are evaluated. Automated analysis of clinical data and non invasive diagnostic methods are important issues.

TRUST provides financial support for three years. Your place of work is at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, but you will also take part in courses and training events at the other universities. Additional Requirements
