PhD Studentships, University of Manchester, UK

PhD Studentships, University of Manchester, UK

Studentships are available for highly qualified applicants for 4-year PhD projects in Integrative Systems Biology at the University of Manchester, UK. These studentships are available to the applicants from the UK and abroad.

Background
Systems Biology is the new science that aims at understanding how living organisms function in health and fail in disease. The new insight is that the important properties of life arise in interactions between individuals, from individual molecules, through individual cells, through organs. The new point in history is that experimental methodology is now available to look at virtually all molecules and other components of living cells. Using modern mathematics and bioinformatics to make computer models of what happens in and with living organisms, Systems Biology seeks to understand how molecules are guided to self-organise into complex processes such as the cell cycle, reproduction, adaptation to a variety of challenges, and the formation of complex structures (www.mcisb.org)Both academia and the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry have realised that the vast amounts of information about individual molecules offered by genomics can only be put to use and lead to understanding through Systems Biology.

Following substantial investments in the new Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (MIB, www.mib.ac.uk), the Manchester Centre of Integrative Systems Biology (MCISB, www.mcisb.org), and the AstraZeneca Chair of Systems Biology, the University of Manchester houses a doctoral training centre for Integrated Systems Biology. Inspired by the top scientists in Systems Biology, students with a physical science/engineering/mathematics background will be teamed up with students from biological and medical backgrounds. Candidates from both backgrounds are invited to apply. They will engage in extensive training, both experimental and theoretical, in Systems Biology within the MIB and in partner groups all over the world.

Eligibility for Funding

Applicants should have an undergraduate or masters degree in the biological, medical sciences or in the physical sciences, mathematics or engineering.

Studentships are available to applicants from the UK and abroad.

Further information and Application
For further information or to apply, email in the first instance Lynne Davies: DTC@manchester.ac.uk

Master Scholarships KSOP Germany

Scholarships for Masters, KSOP Germany
Scholarships are available to the international students, for Masters course in Optics and Photonics at the Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics (KSOP), Universität Karlsruhe, Germany.

Deadline: 15 July each year

General
Optics & Photonics are driven by fascinating scientific challenges, unexpected breakthroughs, and by a huge demand of the market. While basics of optics are typically covered throughout different disciplines during undergraduate education, state of the art aspects of Optics & Photonics are by now only subject of specialized lectures in different university departments. To overcome these limitations, the Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics at the Universität Karlsruhe offers a novel comprehensive Masters and a Ph.D. program.Highly appreciated by the German Federal Government, the state of Baden-Württemberg and 16 leading Optics & Photonics companies, the educational concept of KSOP is supported by an outstanding scholarship program worth up to EUR 800 per month for international students.

MSc Program
The 2-year M.Sc. course in Optics & Photonics qualifies for a further career in industry as well as in research. Completely taught in English, the program is developed for applicants who have accomplished a Bachelor degree in Optics & Photonics, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science , Biology or Medical Sciences.
The Master course is also considered to be the main entrance channel for national and international students who are interested to pursue a Ph.D. thesis work in the field of Optics & Photonics. The program is divided into four stages providing the students with the necessary prerequisites (Stage I: Introduction), to give them a solid background on the most important topics within the wide and diverse field of Optics & Photonics (Stage II: Core Subjects) and let them acquire specialized knowledge in one of the four deepening courses (Stage III: Specialization) to be able to competently perform a six-month research project on a current topic of research (Stage IV: Masters Thesis). In addition, an 8-weeks industrial internship is scheduled between stages 2 and 3.

Scholarship Program
Scholarships of EUR 800 per month are available for a maximum duration of two years. Part of the scholarship is a research assistantship at the university. Furthermore, KSOP offers an elaborated industry internship program. Studying at KSOP also means having the opportunity to participate in KSOP events such as a special tailored orientation phase at the university of Karlsruhe, Summer Schools, company contact fairs, seminars, and many more.
