24 Scolarships Italy

24 PhD Scholarships, Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca, Italy

Competitions for admission/scholarships are open in the PhD Programs given below at Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca, Italy. The scholarships are open to international students (Pakistani students are eligible to apply).

Deadline: 05 December 2008

Brief Description: PhD Programs
Computer Science and Engineering: Theories developed within computer science have been, and still are, remarkably relevant not only for developing devices and tools which are commonly used in today society, but also for facing new theoretical problems of wide perspective. In particular, the study of models, algorithms and verification methods of distributed systems with shared resources, with attention to the problems of security, concurrency, real time, "open endness", distributed decisions, etc. has fostered the development of the informatics of the new wide area networks. Students acquire extensive knowledge of the fundamentals and applications of architectures and languages for global and grid computing, web systems and services, in particular for business applications, embedded systems, web data mining, wired and wireless networks, and mobile systems. In addition to offering broad scope for basic research, these domains define a professional area where all the needs of computer applications on wide are networks can find their fulfilment.

Economics, Markets, Institutions: With its interdisciplinary (theoretical, quantitative and institutional) approach, the program aims at dealing with issues in political economy, applied public economics, and the functioning of industries and markets, the impact of macroeconomic impact on the functioning of markets, as well as on productivity and growth. A distinctive character of the PhD program is the strong integration of theoretical, technical and practical expertise, aimed to educate highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete interventions of political economy. Theoretical methodologies and models will therefore tested through the methodical/systematic investigation of actual cases. At the end of the program, students will be able to catch commonalities as well as distinctive characters of the several markets, in reference to economic laws, market regulations, contractual, managing and organizational solutions.

Political Systems and Institutional Change: The PhD Program aims to make students familiar with analytical tools and methodologies of investigation elaborated within different contemporary traditions in social sciences, thereby providing the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to both evaluate comparatively the performance of institutional systems, and elaborate proposals for structural reforms. The courses will especially focus on the historical, political, institutional and economic dynamics that have been characterising the development of European and ex Soviet countries after the Second Word War. They will then consider among other topics: the institutional and decisional dynamics of European countries and the European Union including the trends towards multilevel governance both at the European and at the domestic level (federalisation, independent regulatory authorities, etc.); transatlantic relations EU-US; relations between politics, social processes and political economy decisions; paths of economic and political development; the institutional workings of international organisations; the characters of some geographical areas of special relevance.

PhD Fellowships Germany

PhD Fellowships, International Graduate School, University of Paderborn, Germany
Applications are being invited for PhD admissions and fellowships to be availed at the International Graduate School, Dynamic Intelligent Systems, at the University of Paderborn Germany.

Deadline (for April 2009) : 30 November, 2008

International Graduate School
The International Graduate School (Dynamic Intelligent Systems) at the University of Paderborn is one of seven NRW Graduate Schools which are initiated and supported by the Ministry of Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of the federal state North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Located in the heart of Europe, it offers a stimulating and supportive environment for research in the rapidly developing field of software, systems and network engineering. This field deals with the construction of so-called embedded or mechatronic systems, which is already a research focus of the University of Paderborn.
The Graduate School is run by the faculties of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics (EIM), Business Administration and Economics and Mechanical Engineering as a research center of excellence in this field. The International Graduate School offers an English speaking program - based on a well structured curriculum - that allows excellent and motivated students to finish their doctoral work within three years. Additionally, attractive fellowships are available. Individual guidance and supervision, education in soft skills and a challenging environment prepare for leadership in academia and industry.

Research Focus
The overall goal of the School is to provide a stimulating environment for research in the rapidly developing field of software, systems and network engineering. The field deals with the construction of so-called embedded or mechatronic systems. Such systems are already in daily use and the social and economic welfare of the modern information society increasingly depends on them. Examples are simple systems like electronic teller machines and complex life critical systems like a modern aircraft or a railway system.
Such systems only function correctly if the often complex interplay between mechanical, electrical and software components is carefully defined and works well. Complexity is further increased when the systems are connected in networks. Challenges for future research in the area are particularly due to the fact that these systems must increasingly become dynamically reconfigurable, such that their components (software and hardware) can be replaced or upgraded during runtime. Such changes can only be contemplated if their success is assured in advance. Not only must the new component work properly, but it also must operate in its new environment without causing any bad side effects. In addition, the evolution of such systems and the implant of components into different, evolving environments require that components become more and more intelligent, i. e., that they adapt automatically to their new or changing environment. Such changing, adaptive systems we call dynamic intelligent systems. They are the focus of the School's research program. PhD projects could be in areas like:
Reconfigurable Hardware and Software Components
Ressource and Communication Management in Dynamic Networks
Organisation of large Dynamic Networks
Interdisciplinary Design Processes
Performance-oriented Modelling and Specification Techniques
Intelligent Systems in Production and Logistics
Intelligent Mechatronic Systems

Post-doc Position at INRA Orléans

Post-doc Position at INRA Orléans, FranceUnit of Soil Science (2 years)

Applications are invited for a two-year post-doctoral research fellowship starting January 2009 at INRA Orleans in the of Soil Science research unit to work on the project given below.

Project Details
Title: Analysis of the spatial variability of N2O emissions at the landform scale
Description: Information on emissions of N2O at the landform scale is needed to evaluate the contribution of agricultural landscape to the global nitrogen cycle. Scaling-up these emissions is difficult because of their high temporal and spatial variability. The post-doctoral fellow will study, on a territory of about 10 km², the relationships between spatial variability of soil conditions and that of N2O emissions.

The objective is to evaluate our capacity to analyse soil conditions, combining measurements and modelling, in order to predict N2O fluxes and to determine the minimum dataset for such predictions. N2O fluxes will be measured near Orleans on a small catchment with contrasted soil types and agricultural practices. Classical closed chambers and a new mobile spectrometer will be used to assess the variability of N2O fluxes.
The post-doc fellow will join a team that is responsible for the characterization of all of the soil conditions. Several collaborating scientists will work with the Orleans INRA team on this project: Pierre Cellier (EGC Grignon) and Valery Catoire (LPCE Orléans) in France, Philippe Rochette (Agriculture Canada, Québec) and Daniel Pennock (University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon) in Canada.
The monthly salary will be 2150 Euro before deductions.
